2024 Korea summer program for composer/performers

new commission from dizi virtuoso Zhang Weiliang

Saturday 30 June, 2018  JH has been commissioned to compose a new work for an ensemble of Chinese and Western instruments for a concert at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing on 12 December, 2018.  The new work, “reflets sur l’eau”, uses the Debussy piano work “reflets dans l’eau” as source material.  Performance details here:   http://www.en.chncpa.org

new commission for Taipei Chinese Orchestra

Friday 22 June, 2018  JH will compose a new violin concerto for Cho-Liang LIN and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in Taipei, Taiwan.  The orchestra will also premiere JH’s other new work for Chinese Orchestra, “Nautilus Symmetry”.   https://english.tco.gov.taipei

2017 Guggenheim Fellowship

Saturday 15 April, 2017   JH has been awarded a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship.  The project will be a major new work for Chinese instrument orchestra.

consortium commission

Saturday  8 October, 2016   JH was commissioned to write a work for string trio and harp in memory of his sister, harpist Deborah Hoffman.  The work, called “of Deborah, for Deborah”, was co-commissioned by Summerfest in La Jolla, CA; Chamber Music International in Dallas, TX and the Aspen Music Festival.  The work was performed at all three venues and an additional performance took place on Sunday 6 November at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Texas tour

Saturday  8 October, 2016   JH is a guest composer/pianist at three universities in Texas in mid-October:  Texas State University (San Marcos), University of Texas at San Antonio and Southwestern University (Georgetown).  Details of performances of his music are to be found on the ‘performances’ page.

new commission

Saturday 11 June, 2016   JH  was recently commissioned by Beijing guzheng virtuoso Qiu Ji to write a trio for sheng, guzheng and percussion.  The work will be performed in Beijing and recorded for CD release in January, 2017.

ACC Festival in Korea

Saturday 21 May, 2016   JH has been invited to be a composer in residence at the first edition of the Asia Music Festival in Gwangju, South Korea.  The festival will take place from 24 to 26 November, 2016.  During the festival, JH’s “The Dizi in my Life” will be performed by dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) virtuoso Zhang Weiliang with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.  More information on the ACC website: /www.acc.go.kr/en
