Odessa Steps

2022 | Conducted Ensemble

Publisher: Onibatan Music
This is a work for solo viola and string orchestra (7221). The title refers directly to the unforgettable scene from Sergei Eisenstein’s film “Battleship Potemkin” which takes place on the famous Odessa Steps.  And the piece was a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It is, at turns, violent as well as lyrical, and makes use of two external melodies used by the composer in other works: “Hey, Tsigelekh” by Mordechai Gebirtig and “Ei, jauga jauga”, a haunting Lithuanian ‘Sutartines’. Odessa Steps was composed for violist Michael Klotz.
